When resilience becomes a burden: making room to receive care

Strength can carry us through difficult seasons. It can also make asking for support feel unfamiliar.

When strength becomes a role

Resilience is often celebrated as an uncomplicated good. Yet when a person has repeatedly had to be the dependable one, strength can become a role they feel unable to set down. Rest may feel unsafe. Help may feel undeserved. Vulnerability may be mistaken for failure.

Receiving is a skill

Accepting care does not erase capability. It expands the range of choices available to you. Therapy can help identify the beliefs that make support difficult to receive and create small, tolerable experiments with asking, resting and allowing others to show up.

A gentler definition of resilience

Sustainable resilience includes flexibility: knowing when to persist, when to pause and when to let another person help carry the weight. The goal is not to become less strong. It is to no longer be trapped by strength.

Making room for a next step

Insight can be useful on its own, and it can also be the beginning of a deeper conversation. If this perspective connects with your experience, our team can help you explore appropriate care.
